If you decide that you do not want your child to participate in this program, please sign and return the form as soon as possible, but no later than March 5 th. You have the option of excluding your child from the program. She has demonstrated a remarkable ability to relate to students and we know that our 5 th grade students will benefit from her expertise. Augello has developed, and is currently teaching grades one through eighth health programs. Her experience includes teaching health and family living at the elementary and middle school level. Theresa Augello, a fully certified health teacher, has earned her second Master’s degree in Health education at Adelphi University and is actively involved in regional health awareness programs. Although concentration will be on physical growth and human development, topics such as teasing, self-acceptance, respecting differences in others, peer pressure and communicating more comfortably and openly with parents will also be discussed. Augello’s program will offer your child an important chance to talk about the many facts, feelings, changes, pressures and concerns that are a part of growing up. There will be ample opportunity to discuss any questions that you might have related to the program. Additionally, she will also help you become more aware of feelings and concerns that children often keep secret, even when parents and children are close.

We are pleased to announce that we will be conducting a program entitled GROWING UP HEALTHY, GROWING UP SMART for boys and girls in the 5 th grade. “Circus skills gives every child the opportunity to succeed at a physical activity and experience physical self-expression,” said Rich Potter of the National Circus Project. The National Circus Project is an innovative cultural arts organization that promotes student participation in physical education and other content areas using “circus” as its theme. Under the direction of circus performers and instructors Keith Leaf and Rich Potter, students throughout the school had the opportunity to learn different circus skills. Fifth graders picked what act appealed to them the most and practiced their routines during their physical education classes in preparation for the big show at the end of the week. Ryan’s dad told the seventh and eighth grade audience that he hoped they would “think differently about the issue of bullying and how we treat each other” after hearing Ryan’s story. At the time of his death, Ryan was a middle school student who had been bullied by peers at school and online.Īs part of the hour-long presentation, Halligan spoke about the devastation of losing his son and the days that followed. Island Park middle school students had an opportunity hear about the life and death of Ryan Patrick Halligan when his father, John Halligan, visited the school in February. Halligan lost his 13-year-old son, Ryan, to suicide in 2003.
